What’s it like to come to work in the UK care sector?

Published On: 20 October 2023

I have taught hundreds of people who have not long arrived in the UK as a sponsored care worker.  Meeting people from different parts of the world is one of the best parts of my job – finding out how they find it here. I remember how strange England seemed and how different the culture was when I came to the UK as a child from South Africa (my English parents were working abroad). People seemed to often disguise their mood or intentions when you met them, for instance, so it’s an odd cultural code you have to work out.

I hear very mixed stories. Some people are very impressed by the UK, or aspects of it. I also hear stories of disappointment, such unwelcome or unfriendly reactions, even racism. Most people say that is takes a lot of getting used to and adjusting to some very different personalities, attitudes and unusual care provision. People’s specific needs (learning, emotional, behavioural and their labels) can seem quite new. It seems new worker’s training or inductions has not helped with this.

Some people admit to feeling lost at work, especially when their role has not been properly explained. Some say they are given work that longer-term workers don’t want to do, which can feel unfair, over time. Some say they can feel vulnerable, like they have been blamed and scapegoated for other’s mistakes.

I would love to hear your experiences, especially about what was helpful or unhelpful when training as a support worker or in mental health. Do leave comments or suggestions in the Contact page. I can quote them here, with your permission. And I like meeting people who are keen to support me with the ‘Workers New to the UK’ training, even as a co-trainer.

Helen was fantastic, clearly very knowledgeable, engaging and the session was interative. For sure the best training session I have received since my time with the company. Helen was brilliant, thank you!

Trainer Helen was by far the best online trainer I have had.
